Accessibility statement for www.be-the-one.co.uk

Prepared: 5 September 2025
Last reviewed: 5 September 2025

This website is run by [Be the One / Rotherham Council]. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using your browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the site using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the site using a screen reader
  • use descriptive link text that explains where a link goes

We’ve also tried to make the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We believe this website is largely accessible and aims to meet WCAG 2.2 AA. However, we know about some issues:

  • Some older documents (PDFs) may not be fully accessible to screen reader software.
  • Third-party embeds (for example YouTube videos or social media widgets) may not fully meet accessibility standards.
  • Very occasionally, heading levels or link wording on legacy pages may need improvement.

We are working through these issues as part of our ongoing content updates.

We’re always looking to improve the accessibility of this website. If you find any problems not listed on this page or think we’re not meeting accessibility requirements, contact: hello@be-the-one.co.uk.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

[Be the One / Rotherham Council] is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Some PDFs and documents are not tagged and may lack proper heading structure or text alternatives. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships) and 1.1.1 (Non-text Content). We are reviewing and replacing or remediating legacy documents on a rolling basis, prioritising high-use content.
  • Third-party embedded content (e.g. YouTube players, social feeds) may not fully meet WCAG requirements. We don’t control these platforms but we choose reputable providers and provide alternative links where possible.

Disproportionate burden

We have not currently claimed disproportionate burden for any content. If we do in future, we’ll document our assessment here.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • Third-party content that we do not fund, develop or control (for example external training sites or helplines) is outside the scope of the regulations.
  • Pre-recorded videos published before 23 September 2020 may not have captions or transcripts. New videos will include captions wherever possible.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

  • Designing and building reusable components that meet WCAG 2.2 AA (headings, buttons, cards, forms, focus states).
  • Writing clear link text (avoiding repeated “Find out more”).
  • Adding alt text to images used for information, and marking decorative images appropriately.
  • Auditing older PDFs and replacing them with accessible HTML where feasible.
  • Training editors on accessibility best practice and regular reviews.

How we tested this website

We last tested a representative sample of pages on 5 September 2025 using a combination of manual checks and automated tools. The sample included: the homepage, Urgent contacts, Recognising signs, Stories, Training, and Contact pages.

We used common approaches including keyboard-only navigation, colour/contrast checks, and automated audits (e.g. axe/WAVE-style tools).

Browsers and assistive technology

This site is designed to work with the latest versions of major browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari) and the built-in accessibility features of Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. For the best experience, keep your browser and operating system up to date.
