Ian’s Story

Read Ian’s Story

While working Ian witnessed the tragic moment that someone chose to end their life.

As Ian struggled to come to terms with what had happened, he began to experience low moods and feelings of confusion.

To help him understand why someone would take their own life, he began attending Andy’s Man Club to listen to other people’s experiences and share his own story.

“Attending Andy’s Man Club has made me realise how powerful it can be to just talk. No matter how trivial you think your problem is, everyone there understands, and you usually find that someone has experienced something very similar, so you never leave feeling alone.

“Being a part of the group is really rewarding, I enjoy welcoming and meeting new members to help them realise that talking gives you the strength to keep going. I have built up an amazing support network and I know that if I find myself needing to talk to someone, I have people who will meet with me for a drink and chat whenever.

“I think a lot of people, especially blokes, believe that talking about how we feel is seen as weak when in reality it is the complete opposite. Talking about how we feel and what goes on in our minds takes more strength and courage than you think. It really is true what they say about a problem shared is a problem halved.

“It is so much better to ask for help rather than seeking a permanent solution to a temporary problem. With the right help and support you can get through any problem.” – Ian, Andy’s Man Club Maltby
